Transforming Eldon Street and The Civic
18th September 2019
BMHT have supported Barnsley in the successful bid to receive £2m funding from Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme.
The programme aims to help transform high streets across the country and the funding has been awarded in support of the regeneration plans to improve Eldon Street and the refurbishment of The Civic.
The plans for Eldon Street in the town centre focus on a heritage-led transformation linking The Glass Works redevelopment and the Old Town conservation area – one of 18 areas in Barnsley that have an architectural or historic interest.
The above picture shows the old and the new of Eldon Street and the clear need for refurbishments of the historic buildings.
The funding will also be used towards a new cultural programme for the town supported by Arts Council England as well as work on Barnsley Civic’s historic frontage.
Barnsley Museums will be involved in delivering the community engagement programme and the associated cultural programme. Stay tuned for more details over the coming months.
