Worsbrough Mill receives funding boost to preserve its history
21st March 2024
Worsbrough Mill has secured funding of £244,111 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to celebrate its unique industrial heritage and future proof its history through new volunteering opportunities, community engagement, and creative commissions.
Worsbrough Mill is a working 17th-century water mill surrounded by a stunning country park in Barnsley. The project, made possible with money raised by National Lottery players, will protect the Mill’s important history, develop new offers, and support volunteers ahead of its 400th birthday in 2025.
The project will also receive £12,500 from Barnsley Museums and Heritage Trust, a charity that supports the work of Barnsley Museums.
The money awarded will support work putting a spotlight on the Mill, creating new activities in the building, such as tours and talks, as well as improving community engagement facilities. It will create exciting new volunteering opportunities focused on the Mill and skills, such as milling, baking, and maintenance.
As part of the project, the team at the Mill will consult with the local community and visitors, working together to decide how the stories of the area are represented.
It will improve the engagement and learning space to benefit schools, families, and local community groups, offering a range of activities and events to showcase the Mill’s heritage and sustainability. It will also see the commissioning of artists and creatives to produce new works inspired by the mill and its surroundings, which will be displayed and performed during the 400th birthday celebrations in 2025.
Cllr Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Worsbrough Mill is a remarkable example of industrial heritage that has survived and adapted over four centuries. Thanks to National Lottery players, this funding will ensure that the Mill continues to thrive as a museum, community hub, and outstanding tourist attraction for generations to come. The heritage offer in Barnsley is outstanding and makes it a brilliant place to come for a free day out.”
