Cannon Hall: The Story of a House and its Family – A Conservation Success Story
11th June 2026
Have you been to see the new exhibition Cannon Hall: The Story of a House and its Family yet? It’s absolutely fascinating and a must see if you would like to learn more about the people who called Cannon Hall home.
It’s particularly special for us here at the Trust to be able to see several of the works on display which have been conserved thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
As well as several portraits of members of the Spencer-Stanhope family, we have also been able to conserve:
- A painting by Abel Hold, an artist who moved from Church Street in Barnsley to Cawthorne in around 1852. Walter Spencer-Stanhope subsequently became his patron.
- A document in Latin Document from 1662 signed by King Charles II
- A Dutch School still Life above the fireplace in the library, believed to be still in the original position chosen for it by John Spencer.
- A painting of the view of Cawthorne Church from the parkland
As you walk round the museum, you will also see evidence of other conservation projects which have been undertaken thanks to supporters of the Trust which include the amazing tapestry in the ballroom, the sparkling chandeliers, the elegant table in the dining room and a beautiful cocuswood cabinet.
We are very grateful for the support of The Leche Trust for a grant to conserve the portrait of Barbara Stanhope (nee Cockroft), The Pilgrim Trust for a grant towards the conservation of the tapestry and The National Manuscripts Conservation Trust for their grant to help conserve the Latin Document.
We would like to thank everyone who has donated to make this work possible and helped bring the stories of Cannon Hall alive. Your donations also support community projects for the people of Barnsley.
