Barnsley On Film Returns to Experience Barnsley This Summer

Take a trip through Barnsley’s history this summer with a series of free Saturday film screenings at Experience Barnsley. Running from 25 July to 29 August, each Saturday features a different film playing on a continuous loop in the main gallery, so there’s no need to book, simply drop in during museum opening hours.
Saturday 25 July: Memories of Maurice Dobson
Celebrate Barnsley Pride with the story of Maurice Dobson and his partner Fred Halliday, who ran a shop together in Darfield that is now the Maurice Dobson Museum & Heritage Centre.
Saturday 1 August: Barnsley On Film
Mark Yorkshire Day with highlights from the Barnsley Archives film collection, including footage from the 1930s, Barnsley Market, parades and Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Barnsley in 1957.
Saturday 8 August: Barnsley Museums Gets Animated
Enjoy a collection of animated films featuring the Barnsley Co-op, behind the scenes at Barnsley Archives, and digital reconstructions of Elsecar and Eldon Street.
Saturday 15 August: Now That’s What I Call Barnsley Museums Music
Discover musical performances and films featuring Simon Armitage and LYR, songs inspired by the River Dearne and Kendray’s swan pond, plus original songs written by the Feels Like Home Group.
Saturday 22 August: Barnsley in the 1960s
Step back in time with this popular archive film, featuring Barnsley Market, local schools, industry, sport, Locke Park and Cannon Hall during the 1960s.
Saturday 29 August: The History of Monk Bretton Priory
Round off the series with an illustrated talk by Fred Thompson, recorded for Barnsley Civic Trust in 2025, exploring the fascinating history of Monk Bretton Priory.
