February is packed with opportunities to explore Barnsley’s past, whether you’re just starting out with family history or curious about what happens behind the scenes at the archives. From pop-up sessions in local libraries to exclusive archive store tours, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Pop-Up Archives – Hoyland
16 February | Hoyland Library, High Croft, Hoyland, Barnsley, S74 9AF
Join the Archives and Local Studies team as they head out into the community with their monthly Pop-Up Archives. Staff will be available to help with family and local history enquiries, alongside access to a wide range of digital resources. These include the Barnsley Chronicle (1858–2023), cemetery burial indexes, and building plans.
You’ll also receive expert guidance on using popular genealogy websites such as Ancestry, Find My Past, and the British Newspaper Archive. While original archive documents won’t be available on the day, visitors can arrange to view them later at Barnsley Town Hall.

Behind the Scenes Tour: Barnsley Archive Stores
Barnsley Archives & Local Studies, Barnsley Town Hall | Tuesday 17 February – 11am & 2pm | Friday 20 February – 11am & 2pm (BSL-interpreted tour)
Go behind the scenes and explore the archive stores hidden beneath Barnsley Town Hall. This guided tour offers a rare glimpse into the extensive collections that document the borough’s history from the 12th century right through to the present day.
Free. Suitable for ages 16+. Booking essential.

Family History Surgeries at Barnsley Archives

These free one-to-one 30-minute sessions are ideal for beginners looking to start their family history journey. Staff will introduce you to key online resources, including Ancestry, Findmypast, and the British Newspaper Archive, and help you take your first steps with confidence.
Sessions are free but must be booked in advance.
