12th February 2026
To celebrate the art and legacy of John Roddam Spencer Stanhope,
Hoylandswaine Arts Group, with support from Barnsley Museums, is hosting a very special event at Penistone Paramount on Sunday, 8 March at 13:00.
This unique occasion celebrates the life and work of this distinguished local artist from Cannon Hall, Cawthorne whose artistic legacy includes significant contributions to Hoylandswaine Church, Marlborough College Chapel, and Holy Trinity Church, Florence. Although his work in Florence is now lost, a precious photographic record, commissioned by the artist himself, is preserved in a book housed at the Jubilee Museum, Cawthorne.
Experience a digitised presentation of the original photographs of Stanhope’s lost works, offering a rare glimpse into his artistry, accompanied by explanations from the renowned Roddam expert, Simon Poë.
The event will include a video connection to view Stanhope’s work at Marlborough College Chapel, with commentary from Dr Simon McKeown. You will also learn more about the place where Stanhope spent his later years, with reflections from Sister Julia Bolton Holloway direct from Florence.
Tickets are £10 each and can be ordered from penistoneparamount.co.uk or by telephone on 01226 767532.
