Wentworth Castle Gardens Awarded Grant
19th October 2026
Wentworth Castle Gardens have been awarded a grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to consult with communities about the historic walled garden.
The National Trust at Wentworth Castle Gardens has been awarded £29,175 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for ‘Beyond the Walls’, an exciting 18-month project focused on the future of the historic walled garden.
Once the productive heart of the estate, much of the walled garden’s six-acre site is currently underused, with limited public access and its historic features hidden from view. Delivered in partnership with Barnsley Museums, ‘Beyond the Walls’ will bring together local communities and partners to explore how this important place can be brought back to life as a space that is valued, used and enjoyed by communities and visitors alike.
Through a programme of workshops, people will have opportunities to help shape a shared vision for the garden’s future.
The project will also collect oral histories connected to the walled garden, creating a lasting record of its historical significance. Anyone with memories of the garden is encouraged to get involved and share their experiences.
‘Beyond the Walls’ is a vital first step towards developing longer-term plans to restore and safeguard the walled garden, ensuring its heritage, stories and potential are secured for future generations.
