Taylor’s of Wombwell – Christmas Pantomime Posters

10th December 2024

Two festive posters by Taylor’s Printers of Wombwell have recently been accessioned into the Barnsley Museums’ collection.

Taylor’s of Wombwell started in the 1890’s in the village of Wombwell. The founder Albert Taylor, ran the business with his two sons, supplying the printing needs of Barnsley and the surrounding area.

By the mid-1920s Taylor’s two sons helped catapult the family business after printing publicity for a London theatrical agent. This helped them become one of the leading printers of the UK entertainment industry advertising everything from the circus, music hall to pantomimes. The firm became a limited company in the 1920’s and in the 1950s, Taylor’s (Theatrical) Printers Ltd. was established to separate the commercial from the theatrical side of the business.

The posters recently added to the Experience Barnsley Museum collection feature the pantomimes Jack in the Beanstalk and Aladdin and were printed by the company c.1930s.
