Summer Events at Wentworth Castle Gardens

17th June 2025

A brand-new summer art installation created by local artists Jo Veal, Patrick Amber and the local community will be arriving at Wentworth Castle Gardens this summer.

Inspired by The HERDS project, a groundbreaking public art and climate initiative, and our grassland habitat restoration work, the butterflies will celebrate nature as well as sparking conversations about how to care for it. Delivered in partnership with Barnsley Museums and kindly supported by Art Fund, Kaleidoscope of Butterflies will arrive on 3rd July and will remain until the end of August.

This year at Wentworth Castle Gardens, a 20-hectare field of species rich grassland has been planted that, once established, will provide a vital restored habitat for pollinators like butterflies as well as other insects, birds and animals.

After you have enjoyed the display why not take part in our eco-warriors trail and explore the Gardens to learn about the eco-friendly work we do here and how you can help? Pick up your free map from the Visitor Reception when you arrive, more information on our eco-warriors event listing.

You could time your visit to see the butterflies to coincide with one of the many other events taking place at Wentworth Castle Gardens over the summer. These include a variety of monthly walks around the gardens and parkland, exclusive tours of the Orangery and Walled Garden (not usually open to the public) and House Tours.

To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, there will be an Open Archives event on the 8th July highlighting what the Wentworth Castle estate would have been like during her lifetime, plus you can enjoy an outdoor performance of Pride and Prejudice by Illyria on 19th June.

There is a fee for some events. To find out more and reserve your spot visit  Events at Wentworth Castle Gardens
