Summer Adventures with Barnsley Museums 

There is still plenty of fun to be had this summer with Barnsley Museums, with activities running right through the holidays for families to enjoy. 

The Great Museum Quest continues until 31 August, inviting children to pick up a free passport at any Barnsley Museum to begin their adventure. By completing one of the suggested free activities at each site, they can collect stickers for their passport. Those who fill it at all five museums will be rewarded with a special edition badge and certificate to mark their achievement. 

Over at Worsbrough Mill, Follow the Mice offers a short and accessible way to explore the country park until 1 January 2026. The lime green trail takes in spectacular views along a half mile route, while the purple trail is a longer one and a half mile walk around the reservoir. Both are signposted by the playful green and purple mouse markers. 

On 20 August, Elsecar Heritage Centre will host Young Inventors, an inspiring hands-on workshop where children can design their own imaginative machines with guidance from friendly facilitators.  

Just two days later, on 22 August, Experience Barnsley will bring back the joy of traditional playground fun with a Sports Day that will have the whole family competing in games that spark nostalgia and laughter. 

For those who love strategy and creativity, Brilliant Board Games on 26 August at Experience Barnsley invites families to play classic games and even invent new ones to take home. Meanwhile, Saturday Storytelling Film Shows run until 29 August, sharing well loved tales from the archives such as The Gingerbread Man and The Three Billy Goats Gruff in an enchanting format perfect for younger audiences. 

Wentworth Castle Gardens is also offering families the chance to make the most of the long summer days with Summer of Play, sponsored by Starling Bank. Running until 31 August, the gardens provide a magical setting of fairy tale castles, secret spaces, and winding paths where children can explore and play every day. 

Barnsley Museums are making sure the summer ends on a high, with experiences full of imagination, creativity, and adventure waiting for visitors of all ages.
