New Railway document acquired by Barnsley Archives and Local Studies

5th August 2024

Railway historians will be particularly interested in a recent purchase at auction by Barnsley Archives.

The original document from 1897 is a conveyance of 9 acres 3 roods and 23 perches of freehold land at Worsbrough for the purposes of railway construction and in accordance with The Midland Railway Act 1893.

The land was sold by Thomas Vernon Wentworth of Wentworth Castle to The Midland Railway Company for the princely sum of £2,938 and 10 shillings. It is signed and sealed by Thomas Vernon Wentworth and also by Lewis Starkey, a Director of The Midland Railway Company.

The document is made all the more interesting by an accompanying plan which shows the proposed route of the line.

It is available to researchers in the Archives Discovery Centre, Barnsley Town Hall (Ref. no. A-4012-Z).  For further information including opening hours visit
