Medieval Mayhem Returns to Monk Bretton Priory

8th May 2025

The popular Medieval Mayhem weekend returns to Monk Bretton’s famous Bretton Priory for its fifth year on May 17th and 18th.

Monk Bretton Priory’s 12th-century remains will come alive with battling knights, jolly jesters and all manner of merriment, with thousands expected to attend what is proving an ever-popular event in Barnsley’s calendar.

This year’s event will be the biggest and most action-packed yet, featuring live knight battles, full medieval re-enactments, performing jesters, storytellers, roaming medieval musicians, hands-on craft demonstrations, and a variety of food stalls. The festival also offers interactive opportunities for learning and discovery, giving children and adults the chance to experience history in a fun and engaging environment.

Organised and led by Jolly Good Communities, the event is entirely volunteer-driven, with a dedicated team working hard to bring history to life for all ages.

“This event is truly a community effort,” said Victoria Agnew, Event Organiser at Jolly Good Communities. “We couldn’t do it without the support of our incredible volunteers who help with everything from setup to ensuring everyone has a fantastic time. It’s a labour of love, and we’re thrilled to see it grow year after year.”

For the first time, Medieval Mayhem is introducing ticketed entry, including a Super Supporter ticket, which will help improve the weekend even further.

“In previous years, we’ve managed to keep the event free to attend, but this year, we’ve had to increase our fundraising efforts to make the event even better and ensure its future,” explained Agnew. “The ticket sales, especially the Super Supporter tickets, will help us book exciting additions requested by our community – like fire-breathers and falconry displays – to make this the biggest and best event yet.”

Last year’s festival welcomed over 5,000 visitors across the weekend, and organisers are expecting even more attendees this year.

“We’ve seen tremendous support from the local community and beyond, and this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest yet,” added Agnew.

Lauren Brown, of Monk Bretton, who attended last year with her family, shared:

“I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when we first visited Medieval Mayhem, but I was blown away by how incredible it was. The knight battles were so exhilarating, and the performers were fantastic – especially the jester! It felt like we were transported back in time. The whole event was so much more than we imagined, and we had an amazing day. We’ll definitely be coming back this year.”
