Making the most of winter

14th January 2025

There are plenty of opportunities to explore Wentworth Castle Gardens differently throughout the winter months. Upcoming events include:

Tea, Talk and Treat: Revealing footsteps of the past – Thursday 23 January 1.30 pm – 3pm

Join National Trust archaeologist, Mark Newman, in an afternoon of revelation. Mark’s talk will unveil discoveries of Wentworth Castle Gardens found using both the familiar and the more cutting-edge tools of his trade.

Be amongst the first to hear about future investigations as you enjoy light refreshments and relaxed discussion with an expert. Booking via the website is essential as places are limited and tickets are £8 plus normal admission.

Ever wanted to experience the gardens after dark? Then join Steve Bradley, our experienced photography volunteer as he delivers a light painting photography workshop as darkness falls (3.30pm – 5.50 pm) on Wednesday 22 January. Using mobile phone cameras and torches this session is set to inspire both young and old, those new to photography and those who are more experienced to create simple effects. Booking is essential as places are limited.

Regular opportunities to discover and learn more about the past and present of Wentworth Castle Gardens and of the building at the centre of the estate, operated by our partners, Northern College, resume this month. The first free (normal admission applies) Ranger Ramble takes place on 29 January, where there will be opportunity to see the results of the recent traditional hedge laying. Friday 31 January is the first day for 2025 House Tours. These tours are chargeable, and booking is essential

For those who prefer to discover at their own pace two trails, the garden’s Enchanted tree trail and the parkland’s Woolly Jumper Walk are available to pick up until the end of the month. Already you will find colour in the garden with Mahonia’s in bloom, snowdrops peeping through the soil and buds of early flowering specimens of our three national collections, camellia williamsii species magnolia and species Rhododendron being to swell.

With new year’s resolution still in the air, Beginners Run group (all abilities welcome) provides the opportunity to explore the estate ‘on the run’. This takes place every Wednesday at 10.15am and attracts reduced admission to the site. All of these activities take place with volunteer support so if your resolution is to give back to the community, to get involved with a worthwhile cause, to share your skills, to take on a new challenge, to learn new things or meet new people then why not consider volunteering?
