Funding Secured For Barnsley Museums & Family Learning Programme

9th February 2024

Barnsley Museums and Heritage Trust has secured funding of forty thousand pounds from the Garfield Weston Foundation on behalf of Barnsley Museums.

The money will support Barnsley Museums Learning in enhancing and developing its schools,  family learning and community arts programmes.

Barnsley Museums Learning allows children, families and local communities to access the borough’s vibrant history across five free heritage sites alongside exciting community projects providing high-quality arts and cultural activities to Barnsley residents.

They offer a hugely successful schools programme, which last year welcomed 5,475 children from 77 schools. Over 34 thousand families participated in accessible,  intergenerational activities including family trails, workshops, with lots of free things to do during school holidays.

The funding will allow Barnsley Museums Learning to continue their outstanding work and offer children, families, young people and community groups in Barnsley and beyond, new activities and cultural experiences that are accessible to all.

Cllr Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “We are delighted to have received such a substantial amount of funding, which will really support children, families, young people and our communities in Barnsley. The work of Barnsley Museums Learning is hugely important not only is sharing our borough’s history, but also in offering opportunities to learn new skills, spend time with loved ones, and have lots and lots of fun. Barnsley Museums are great places for families to visit and they are absolutely free to enter.”
