Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone Celebration Event

8th July 2024

9th July 2024

12pm – 4pm

The Eldon Street HSHAZ project is coming to an end, and we want to celebrate the achievements and the legacy of the project with the people of Barnsley and beyond with a day of exciting activities.

We also want to thank everyone who has been involved in the project –  funders, partners,  businesses and property owners, volunteers, participants, artists and performers who should all be immensely proud of what has been accomplished together.

The four-year project, funded by Historic England and Barnsley Council, has worked with local businesses and property owners to fund conservation repairs to key historic buildings on the west side of Eldon Street. The landmark project is the Civic, Barnsley, formerly the Barnsley Mechanics Institute and Public Hall.

The HSHAZ has also worked with the local community to uncover and celebrate the stories and often overlooked heritage of one of Barnsley’s most important historic high streets, really putting a spotlight on the area.

To mark the end of the Eldon Street HSHAZ project, there will be a day of fun-filled activities on and around Eldon Street and the Glassworks Square.

You can enjoy:

  • Eldon-themed family crafts in the Library at the Lightbox
  • Street performers and entertainment
  • Silent disco featuring the songs written by Simon Armitage and LYR – all inspired by Eldon Street from 1pm – 3pm
  • Free cinema screening in the Parkway cinema featuring films about Eldon Street and followed by a screening of Calendar Girls at 2pm.

The celebration day is free and open to everyone. You don’t need to book in advance, just turn up and join the fun.
