Corporate Volunteering at Cannon Hall

12th November 2025

Some of our Trustees, along with other Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council employees, recently participated in a corporate volunteering day in Cannon Hall’s beautiful parkland.

It was absolutely throwing it down when we set off from home, but the weather was kind to us, and it had faded to drizzle by the time we arrive and completely dried out by mid-morning.

Our task was to remove the epicormic growth and any fallen leaves that had accumulated around the base of the trees in the beautiful lime tree avenue. When deer roamed the parkland, they would have eaten the epicormic shoots and undertaken this pruning task on our behalf.

It was a very therapeutic job, however, and it was great to see the before and after photograph. You could really see the difference you were making.

We had a brilliant day. It was very rewarding and the camaraderie and conversation amongst the group was fantastic.

The corporate volunteering sessions have finished for the year now, but will start again in the spring. If this sounds like something you and your colleagues would like to be involved in, please get in touch with museumvolunteering@barnsley.gov.uk
