Buns on the run in Barnsley

16th August 2018

Children and community groups in Barnsley will be given the opportunity to learn traditional baking skills this Autumn thanks to lottery funding.

We have secured a £10,000 grant for Worsbrough Mill Museum & Country Park via the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme to deliver the ‘Buns on the Run’ community project.

The funding has enabled the mill to purchase a new mobile bread oven and trailer which will make traditional bread making and educational workshops accessible to children and community groups in the borough.

The Buns on the Run workshops are due to start in September and will be delivered by head miller at Worsbrough Mill, Simon Dodd. Simon from Selby, North Yorkshire, was recently appointed to the role after a nationwide search for a new miller attracted applicants from across the UK and abroad.

The workshops will demonstrate how easy it is to make bread at home using high-quality local ingredients.

Worsbrough Mill Museum & Country Park is part of the Barnsley Museums portfolio, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Craig Hartley, business development manager at Barnsley Museums, said: “We are thrilled to have received funding from Awards for All to take our mobile bread oven on a tour of Barnsley.

“The workshops aim to bring people from different communities together to help tackle loneliness, mental wellbeing and breaking down language and cultural barriers, as well as encouraging traditional cooking skills, developing life skills, healthy eating and tackling obesity. We’re really looking forward to meeting people out in the community to share our passion for traditional baking using our own organic flours.”
