Building Bridges & Forging Ahead At Elsecar

9th February 2024

A new community and volunteering project, Building Bridges & Forging Ahead, is celebrating the heritage of Elsecar, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project will build a People’s Archive of Elsecar and make an incredible piece of public art to mark the 200th anniversary of spectacular bridges being built for an island off the coast of Africa. Special community workshops will also explore our global links.

There’s lots of volunteering to get involved in too, including talking to visitors, recording memories, working with our green spaces, improving habitats and understanding historic buildings.

We are excited to see the development of the People’s Archive, including the recording of memories from people who worked at Elsecar Main Colliery, the industrial workshops, village memories and much more. Cllr Stowe, Mayor of Barnsley enjoyed reminiscing and recording his memories of working as an apprentice at Elsecar’s industrial workshops. Why not get your memories recorded too!

The project is hosting a Community History Day in the Visitor Centre on Saturday 24 February 11am to 3pm. You are welcome to pop along, find out more about the project and how to get involved!
