Barnsley College Receives Awards
8th August 2023
A recent awards ceremony at Barnsley Metrodome saw Barnsley College, Sixth Form and University Centre students acknowledged for their many fabulous achievements.
Twenty awards were presented, including Apprentice of the Year, Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust, Enterprise Achievement, Equality and Diversity, Fusion Arts, Brian Glover Outstanding Achievement in Performing Arts, Frank Johnston Outstanding Achievement in Public Services, Overcoming Adversity, Progression Award, Societies Award, Student of the Year, Student Voice Representative, Townend Tribute, Tutorial Award, Work Placement and Internship and the Principal’s Award.
Guests were entertained by Barnsley College’s Dance and Musical Theatre students and the Barnsley Youth Choir. The keynote speaker was former College student Gary Clarke, one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance artists.
Gemma Clarke was the winning student, here is a description of why she won:
The Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust sponsor an award for students who have made a significant contribution to Culture whilst at College, and our Trustee, Milly Charlesworth-Constable was on hand to present it. This year’s winner was Gemma Clarke, who is an avid sharer of the culture and origins of Elsecar Heritage Centre during taught sessions with other students.
She is keen to share her knowledge of the site and any changes and events happening at the centre. It is rewarding to hear stories from her about the different attractions at the centre, especially the work she does in leading the tours and sharing her wealth of knowledge with the young people of Barnsley.
Alongside her college studies, Gemma is also a Visitor Services Assistant at Elsecar Heritage Centre, where you may well be able to catch her conducting one of the guided tours and take advantage of her extensive knowledge.
Well done to Gemma and all the other prize winners on the evening. It really was a fabulous evening of celebration of the fantastically talented young people of Barnsley.
