Awards Nomination
14th June 2022
We are delighted to announce that our friends at Barnsley Archives and Local Studies have been nominated for an Archives & Records Association Excellence Award in the record keeping service of the year category.
Barnsley Archives was founded in 1987 and based in the old Central Library building in Barnsley. It merged with the Local Studies Library in 1998 to form Barnsley Archives and Local Studies.
The service collects, preserves and makes available to documentary heritage of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. Contained in secure and environmentally-controlled stores are thousands of archives donated by individuals, families and organisations charting the history of the Borough from the 12th to the 21st Centuries. These include parish council registers, family and estate records, minutes from meetings of local groups and clubs, photographs, maps, films and so much more.
The Archives team maintain an online catalogue and can provide a copying service for some of the documentation – where copyright allows.
They have recently completed the ‘All Manner of Wickedness’ project, making available more than 300 years’ worth of nonconformist archives and are currently undertaking their ‘Remotely Digital’ project, training and upskilling remote digital volunteers to help understand, interpret and transcribe sound and film collections.
Voting is now open, and after all this hard work, we think the team thoroughly deserves to win!
